Mercy Johnson Okojie is a Nigerian Actress. Commonly known as Mercy Johnson or MJ, she stands as one of the most, if not the most, controversial actresses in Nigeria. Both in her movies and real life, she is ever surrounded by all types of critics. She first came to limelight when she featured in the movie, The Maid, where she played a possessed Nanny role. Ever since, she has attracted multiple movie producers and evidently, has appeared in many movies.

The actress was born on August 28, 1984, in Lagos, to a former naval officer, Mr Daniel Johnson and mother Elizabeth Johnson. Originally hails from Okene, Kogi State Mercy Johnson grew up in a family of 7 children. As the fourth child, she has 3 older sisters and 3 younger brothers.

MJ spent her childhood in various barracks with her father who was constantly being transferred due to his job as military personnel. As one who has attained a certain level of success in life, MJ had a tough upbringing.

Mercy Johnson has dropped out of school several times for financial reasons. On various occasions, she hawked drinking water and other food items and has served as a housemaid to help make earns meet.

There were difficulties in paying for her school fees and speaking of school, she started acting because she failed the University entrance examination.

Mercy Johnson’s first movie was ‘The Maid,’ a role she auditioned for shortly after her secondary school. Her excellent performance in the movie launched her into stardom and paved ways for a successful career in Nollywood.

MJ subsequently featured in other movies such as Hustlers, Baby Oku in America, War in the Palace, and later took home an award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2009 African Movie Award ceremony.

With her hard work in acting, she has earned a number of awards. Aside from several nominations, Mercy Johnson has won the best actress for movie ‘Dumebi, The Dirty Girl’ at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards of 2013 held on March 9, 2013. The event was hosted at the Eko Hotel and suites. In 2012 and 2014, she took home Nollywood Movies Awards for the Best Leading Actress.

The Nollywood star founded the Mercy Johnson Foundation that is aimed at supporting children and widows who are less fortunate. On December 23, 2013, MJ donated livelihood materials to 5,000 Widows in Uromi, her husband’s hometown. The materials included foodstuff, blankets and Khangas.

Ban

Mercy Johnson was once banned from acting for being too expensive. On the 3rd of November, 2013, the movie marketers of Nollywood threatened to prohibit her from the industry due to her high demands. She and co-Nollywood stars such as Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Richard Mofe Damijo, Emeka Ike, Ramsey Nouah, Nkem Owoh, Stella Damasus and Jim Iyke were prohibited from acting, for reportedly demanding outrageous pay raise per movie.

However, the ban was lifted by marketers/producers on the 9th of March, 2014, following an apology by the actress.

Mercy Johnson is the 3rd richest actress in Nigeria with a net worth of about N600 million, charging between N1.8 million to N2 million per movie. Beside proceeds from her acting career, Johnson became the Senior Special Assistance to the Kogi State governor in 2017 and currently the brand ambassador of Mr Chef iodized salt.
